Sportswriter Neil Best on the release of the upcoming film, Grudge Match, with Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro:

…now that the ads for the film are in heavy rotation, including a playful “Rocky’’ reference in a meat locker, I no longer can resist sharing another such nod to the past, in which Stallone’s character inevitably finds himself facing a training regimen that includes raw eggs.

“Fighters still do this?’’ Stallone asks. “It seems like a lot of cholesterol.’’

There…feel better now?

Saw the original Rocky at the Murray Hill Theatre on 34th and Third in NYC (now gone). According to a 1976 article in the NY Times, Stallone was down to his last hundred bucks with a pregnant wife and no prospects when he sat down and wrote the film script in 3-1/2 days. Producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff bought it but suggested Burt Reynolds, James Caan, or Ryan O’Neal for the lead. Stallone suggested himself.

The film grossed $225,000,000 on a $1,000,000 budget, earned Stallone two Oscar nominations and a long and wealthy career.

Keep punching…
